July 17th Personal Training Session

Participants: Jeff, Moody, & Jon (Photographs by Alayna)
Location: Whitney PS

Another hot, sunny day played host to today's workout. Jeff had a few days off, so we decided to hit him hard today. After a full body stretch and active warmup, we did eight rounds of Tabatas to get ourselves going. We worked striking combos, but the essence of the drill was to work around the kettlebell as a centre point, always keeping our hips square. This may be a no-no in boxing, but in Mixed Martial Arts, where takedowns and kicks are permitted, this drill is key. After eight rounds of Tabatas, the real work began. All drills were performed in immediate succession (save for water breaks) so as to keep the intensity level high. The workout went as follows:
50 metres of athletic skipping
50 walking lunges
20 pull-ups

20 box jumps
20 dips

30 knees to elbows
10 windshield wipers

15 kettlebell swings (each side)
10 kettlebell push-ups, 4 sets each (while one of us was working the pushups, the other two were working boxing combinations/defensive drills) - for the final set Jeff and I did 20 reps, while Moody cranked out 25. Atta boy.

30 wallball shots (two balls were used, one 8lbs, one 8.8 lbs)

30 sit-ups

Mini circuit of 5 hammer-grip pull-ups, followed immediately by 5 dips; 4 sets
15 kettlebell swings (each side)
30 medicine ball twists (the ball was held by the handles and had to make contact with the wall on both sides of our body for one rep)
20 wallball shots

20 towel pull-ups (2 sets of 10 each)
10 knees to elbows
4 L-sits, 10 seconds each

Not a bad go of things for our first attempt at this particular workout, which I have dubbed "The Izzy" after everybody's favourite personal trainer, Izzy Mandlebaum ("It's go time!").
